CAFU   people  1944–96

I am hoping that some of you will recognise those people I have forgotten or simply don't know.  If you can help,  please email me, Jim Fuller, at j3rivers@gmail.com
When Eddy Harris died in Nov 2011, his son, Steve, sent me many of his 35m slides, now included.
Jan Jenkins provided many pictures, as has Ian Miles.
If you have any pictures of CAFU, aircraft, people or equipment that you would like to see published on this site, then I will endeavour to oblige.

Picture

No. 1 of 82 — or thereabouts.

This shows Capt "Trader Horn", or perhaps "Trader" Horn or even Trader Horn on the right.
Did he have another name?

On the left is Navigator, later Senior Navigator, Jimmy (Taffy) Moore.

The aircraft is Dove G-ALFT which was registered in December 1948 but didn't arrive until April 1949.
When and where was the picture taken?

This is one of the many characatures that Jack Picken drew of the aircrew at Stansted.  This one of Ian Selwyn, ex Navigator who went on to take his pilot licence and Instructor Rating.

Were they all drawn in the Fifties?

Are there any more that could be shown?

On the left is, I believe, George Harding, CAFU Hanger Foreman in the 1960's (and probably the 50's) before the arrival of Ken Camp.

On the right is Eddy Harris, Tels Engineer who oversaw equipment going into the HS748 in the late 1960's.  Eddy, promoted to Tels Superintendent around 1979, after (or before) Joe Gidman retired - unless you know better.

When did George Harding retire or when did Ken Camp become Hanger Foreman?

How about the aircraft, is it one of the Gemini?

Commander CAFU Capt B.E.E. Marshall

Was this a handing over ceromony, most likely at Woodford before delivery in July 1969 for G-AVXI and September for VXJ - tells Tony Doyle, John Havers and Richard Church (many thanks).

Who are the other two gentlemen?
Perhaps one from HS and the other a politician?

The photographer, Peter Moon tells me he took this photo at Stansted where the hangar staff erected this temporary stage.

Alec Brock, Eddy Dovey, Nigel Foulkes, Eddy Harris and Joe Gidman.
Is that Pat Moylette in the striped shirt with his back to us ?

This photo should help work out the timing as Eddy Harrris is Probably Superintendent and Joe Gidman took over from Eddy.  Could this be the changeover time of 1979 when I believe Eddy retired?

Is this when CAAFU Tels department came under National Air Traffic Services?

Picture
No. 13

Joe Gidman again, but who are the other two men on his left?
And why the need to record the visit?
Stephen Raindle believes that second from right is believed to be Stanley Clinton Davis, a possible Undersecretary at the DTI or Board of Trade.
This may have been in the 1974–79 period —  though this would make Clinton Davis with the Government when CAFU was with the CAA.

EQUIPMENT
Graham Talbot explains this was the left hand calibration equipment bay, consisting of three racks.  The centre rack containained from the top:
1. Mnemonic display showing schematically the route of the calibration signal feed to the aircraft.
2. The intercom system enabled the cal-bay engineer to communicate with the calibrating engineer in the aircraft.
3. The left hand cal-bay signal route switching panel.  These operated co-axial relays, rather than patch leads, to reduce errors due to constant reconfiguration.
4. The ILS Tone Source, a manufactured copy of a prototype made by CAFU calibration engineers, very much the baby of Jerry Wilcockson.  Notable, it contained a Quad Stereo amplifier, specialist filters for the 90Hz and 150Hz tones, a bespoke ratio transformer and a metering unit for measuring when the amplitude of the two tones were equal.  The audio equivalent of zero Difference in Depth Modulation (DDM).
5. Another manufactured copy of prototype equipment.  A secondary but integral part of the Tone Source.  In this case providing both variable and preset ratios of modulation tones to modulate the R.F. signal generator that can be seen behind Joe Gidmans right hand shoulder.
Graham continues to explain that an impressive display of the overall system could be demonstrated by feeding both Localiser and Glide Path signals to the calibration aircraft.  Selecting the calibration ILS to NAV3. simulating a coupled approach.  Then switching this equipment to variable, the aircraft control surfaces responded to the adjustment of the large top-centre variable ratio potentiometer.  A very expensive remote control system I understand!

Ted Canning, Rodney Prior, Capt John Sweet, Wendy Chapman  and John Hassett (my thanks to Wendy Chapman).

Wendy believes it was pre departure of the BAe 125, summer of 1987.

This was a pre-farewell hangar departure ceromony held on the 31st August 1987.
Rodney Prior had been the 125 licensed engineer for 25 years.  John Hassett, cleaner, had done 30 years and Ted Canning, cleaner/driver had been with the unit for eight years.  Wendy Chapman had provided five years administrative support before having a spell in the old Tower at Stansted
It was hoped that most of the engineering staff would be staying on with Aviation Traders Engineering.

John Walford in the Calibration Laboratory, the centre and the right hand bay a mirror image of the left hand bay.  Sadly, John died in December 2014.

Graham Talbot points out that the right hand VOR rack is empty and the centre test bay has three racks, indicating an early rebuild at Stansted House during the move from the 'Teripin building' adjacent to Fields Hanger in the early 1970's.
The centre test bay was reduced to two racks a few years later.

1. Just below the time switch in the centre bay is the CAFU domestic radio frequency receiver, an extension from the Ops room radio.
2. The RF stability receiver/recorder comparing the CAFU RF stability with Droitwich.
3. The MOD Scope enabled an accurate measurement of the modulation depth.  Developed from a CAFU prototype based on an old Dumonte oscilloscope, it incorporated the deflection electrodes of the CRT as part of a tuned circuit, thus enabling visual measurements of the resultant lisidue display.  (The original may have been made by Gerry Wilcockson)
4. Immediately below is a synchronising unit and an Audio Frequency generator.
5. Graham was unable to recall the the use of the top unit in the right hand rack, nor the use of the two digital Volt meters.
6. The third unit down is the N100, an ILS test set.  It could display a very accurate deviation indication.  As Graham recalls, in Glideslope one mA. deviation (on the top centre meter) was equivalent to one tenth of an inch in height at threshold.

Thanks to Geoff Nash, ex ATCO, who believes this was taken at Bournemouth, Hurn aerodrome, when CAFU flew GCA training flights and were most happy to have ATC passengers.

The Captain stepping in is Ben Gunn, and the passenger holding the door is thought to be Peter Carter.  Both Geoff and Peter became ATCOs at Heathrow.  Peter was probably undergoing Approach Radar Training as an ATC Cadet at the time and willing to find out what happened on the other end of the blip.

Benn Gunn started out as a Navigator at CAFU, trained for his CPL at Oxford with CSE and eventually gained his ATPL and went on to be an Examiner and a Captain on the HS748 with the Flying Unit.

This was sent in by Bridget Rigby from Wisconsin, USA.  This is one of the earliest 'People' photos (c1953/54) and shows her father & Mother Mr & Mrs Alan White, they are on the right-hand table, on the inside. Alan is looking at the Camera, and her Mother is looking down at the table at that moment.
At the centre far table is thought to be G/C Georg Donaldson, Commander.  To his right is Don & Jenny Tucker. Further to the right is Molly & Chick "Jock" Keir (man with moustache).  On the RHS outside table, in front of the standing waitress are Dick Whittaker and his wife.  On the outside L/H table, I believe Dereck Carruthers can be seen (fair, slicked back hair), and maybe nearest the camera on the extreme left is Ian Murdock with glasses.  On the LH inside table is Len Yard (goatee beard) and wife.
